All Saints’ Day At-Home Sunday Service for October 31st

(Note: This sermon was originally published on November 1st, 2020.)

All Saints’ Day celebration has a long history in the worship life of the Christian Church. It began as a commemoration of the martyrs who had died for the faith, and it has since become a day when we honor and remember those who, in death, have joined the Church Triumphant, as well as the faithful saints of the present who serve Jesus Christ. Martin Luther held that all Christians are simultaneously sinner and saint–a sinner because of our rebellious nature, but a saint because of salvation in Jesus.

Pastor Rike’s Sermon

On this day we remember those holy ones grasped by the grace of God.  We remember the hardships and ordeals they endured.  And, more than any of that we remember how their situation in this world did not define their future; instead, they were defined by their faith and hope in Christ Jesus.  Today, we remember those saints because they point us to the grace and blessing of heaven already present in this world through Jesus.  And, Christ Jesus brings all of us into the future he has already entered.  His resurrection vindicates the faith and hope that sustained countless generations of saints. Today we rejoice in the fellowship of the saints and in the promised future that blesses us even now.
