St. Luke, Evangelical (The Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost), At-Home Service for October 24th

(Note: This sermon was originally published on October 18th, 2020.)

Today we remember the witness of St. Luke.  He wrote the Gospel bearing his name so that other people might also hear what those who were eye witnesses from the beginning with Jesus had to say about the Lord (Luke 1:1-4).

Luke also understood himself to be a witness of the forgiveness he had received through Christ Jesus.  At one time Luke may have been a physician, but after he began working as an Apostle and Evangelist he used words about Jesus to bring spiritual healing to people the same way a doctor does surgery or gives medicines to heal physical bodies.

St. Luke was able to reach many people with the good news of what God had done through Jesus.  Even though many people needed to hear the good news of Jesus, St. Luke was not able to reach all of them.

Today the church remembers St. Luke.  He was known for two things.  First, in the letter to the Colossians (4;14), he was described as the “beloved physician.” In that capacity, he facilitated healing and life. As such, our congregation will also focus on healing today.

But, perhaps even more than being a physician, St. Luke has become known as an Evangelist.  He authored both the Gospel bearing his name as well as the sequel to that Gospel, the Book of Acts.

One might think that St. Luke had two different careers, first as a physician and then, for the rest of his life as an Evangelist. But, there is a continuity between the two. That continuity is the central focus of this sermon.
