The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, At-Home Service for July 18th

A new television show recently aired on CBS. The show is called “Tough as Nails.” It is similar to shows that have been done in the past such as Mike Rowe’s “Dirty Jobs” or “Undercover Boss.” The idea behind all of these is whether the people on the show have what it takes to get a job done.

In the passage read from the Gospel according to Matthew (13:51), Jesus asked the crowds who heard his parables, “Have you understood all this?” In essence, what he was asking was do you have what it takes for the kingdom of heaven to be present among you? They said, “yes.”

Pastor Rike’s Sermon

Even in the midst of our sins, we know that steadfast, forgiving love which establishes the kingdom and gets the job done. We know it through the crucified and risen Christ Jesus, the son of David (Matthew 1:1 and following). On the cross and in the grave, Jesus has joined humanity in our exile from God and in the captivity, we experience as a result of our sin. His resurrection proves the steadfast love of the LORD has no end. That love is the bond of the Spirit, present among us today, forgiving our sins, drawing us to the kingdom of heaven, through Christ Jesus the Son, to the glory of God, the heavenly Father. Amen
