The Day of Pentecost, At-Home Service for May 23rd

The passage read today from Gospel according to John recalled what Jesus said right before his Ascension to the right hand of God in heaven. We already heard about many of those things last Sunday.

For example, last Sunday we heard that Jesus ordered the apostles “not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for the promise of the Father. Again, last Sunday we heard that Jesus told the apostles, “you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Finally, we heard last Sunday that Jesus said those apostles would receive power when the Holy Spirit had come upon them. Likewise, today we have heard Jesus said, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf.” And again, “…it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.”

Pastor Rike’s Sermon

The passage read today from the Book of Acts told about the fulfillment of those promises. We heard that the Holy Spirit did descend upon the Apostles. Even though the Day of Pentecost was described in only the second of twenty-eight chapters in the Book of Acts, one could reasonably think it must have been the end of the story. Promise made; promise kept.
