Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands have a more difficult time recovering from the storms because of their inaccessibility, lack of donors, and minimal assistance programs. According to a recent article in the September 10, 2017 issue of USA Today, the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD), is an alliance of volunteer organizations which helps FEMA channel disaster assistance into affected areas. About 75% of the organizations that are part of the alliance are faith-based! Another similar type of organization with a global focus is Halloween party-goers in exchange for a donation to Lutheran World Relief, which has an excellent track record of stepping in to support people affected by such disasters. They are rated 92.52 (out of 100) by Charity Navigator. As followers of Jesus, helping people in need is what we do. As we celebrate 500 years of the Reformation, let us join with other Lutherans in supporting LWR’s efforts in the Caribbean!
