Community Outreach

How we support the local and global community

Our Community Outreach programs are lead by our Social Ministry Committee. This group organizes our church’s activities with the goal of extending Christian compassion and helpfulness to the ill, the aged, the orphaned, the underprivileged, the imprisoned, and, in general, to persons of all ages in need of aid in body or soul.

Monthly Benevolences

Each month, we support a different organization in need with our offering dollars. Annually, we determine the organizations we support each month. In the past, we have supported the following people or organizations:

Lutheran World Relief
Lower Valley Community Food Bank
Glade Run
Shepherd’s Heart Veteran’s Home
Gettysburg Seminary Student Fund
Thiel College
North Hills Community Outreach
Seminary/Scholarship Fund in Honor of Pastor Musser
Lutheran Disaster Response
Alaska Mission for Christ
Bethlehem Haven
ELCA Malaria Relief Project
Lutheran Senior Life
ELCA Support
We support ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) Southwestern Synod projects related to global issues through awareness and fundraising events.

Backpack for Hunger

We donate funds to “Backpack for Hunger,” a Fox Chapel Area School District initiative that helps prevent hunger for area children during the weekend.

Lower Valley Community Food Bank

Each month, we donate needed, designated items to this food bank.

Bassler Cottage

A group of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church women make the lives of the girls at Bassler Cottage (at Glade Run) brighter by sponsoring parties several times per year.

Mitten Tree

Each November, we collect mittens, hats, scarfs and socks and then distribute them to needy families.

Passavant Assisted Living

We ensure that every Passavant Assisted Living resident has a Christmas gift under the tree.

Care Packages for College Students

We send “goodie” packages at Halloween and Easter to Good Shepherd members who are away at college.
