The Third Sunday in Lent, At-Home Service for March 7

If you have driven much in Aspinwall you know that almost all of the numbered streets are one way. That often means taking an extra trip around the block to find a street that is headed in the direction one wants to go. Fortunately, Freeport Road runs in both directions through the length of Aspinwall.

This connects with the previous two covenants we have learned about in this series of Lenten sermons. Each of them was like a one-way street. The covenant the LORD made following the flood remembered the past. The covenant the LORD made with Abraham looked toward the future. Like Freeport Road, the Covenant the LORD made with His people at Sinai as embodied in Ten Commandments, runs in both directions at the same time. The broader story of which the Ten Commandments are a part shows how those Commandments point both toward the past and the future. Likewise, how the Ten Commandments work, their function among us, also demonstrates that they look both toward the past as well as the future.

Pastor Rike’s Sermon

Looking at the story or narrative of the book of Exodus, the words God spoke, the Ten Commandments, are located exactly in the middle of the book. They were given at the same place where the story of Exodus began, on Mount Sinai, the mountain of God. That was where the LORD first called Moses. The LORD said that after Moses had brought the people out of Egypt they would worship God on that mountain. Having returned to Mount Sinai, the people were assembled to worship, being bound by the blood of the sacrifice to the words of God spoke there.
