The Second Sunday in Lent, At-Home Service for February 28

Last week we heard about the covenant God made after the flood. Today we have heard about the covenant the LORD made with Abram. The first was focused on the past. The second is focused on the future. The difference between the two is captured by the phrase the LORD addressed to Abram at the beginning of the passage read today from Genesis. The LORD said to Abram, “…walk before me and be blameless.”

Pastor Rike’s Sermon

Many of us walk, but not all of us do the kind of walking mentioned in the passage read from Genesis. For example, for more than a year Tonya and I have walked every day with only three exceptions. Every day we follow the same route. From Kittanning Pike, we enter Greenwood Cemetery near Kerr Elementary School. We walk down the lane and then bear to the left, passing the Civil War Memorial statue of General Custer. Then we make the loop around the Heinz family plot and exit the cemetery the very same way we entered it. Although the seasons change, our path always remains the same. Regardless of whether it is raining or snowing, bitterly cold or beastly hot, we walk the same route because it is familiar to us. We don’t even have to think about where we are going; we do it automatically.
