The Fourth Sunday in Lent, At-Home Service for March 14

One of my favorite books in childhood was “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” by Judith Viorst. I suspect our family had that book checked out of the library so often that very few others ever had the chance to read it. Even after my parents had already read the book to my brother and me at bedtime, we would ask them to read it again, and again. While I commend the book to families with children, one doesn’t have to have read it to understand the plot. The title says it all.

Pastor Rike’s Sermon

There is a similarity between Alexander’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and the experience of Israel in the passage read today from the book of Numbers. As we heard last week they had already left Egypt, headed east, arriving at Mount Sinai. They committed themselves to do all that the LORD would speak to them there. Despite that commitment, they engaged in idolatry, worshipping a golden calf instead of trusting the LORD with wholehearted allegiance.
