Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost At-Home Service for Oct 11

This week’s Gospel is a parable and claims to be more than just a response to rejection. The parable says something about the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 22:1). The parable, told at the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry, connects with the beginning of his ministry. Jesus began his preaching by saying “the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4;17). We do not yet see that kingdom reflected in the world around us. But, that does not mean it is any less present. In fact, the resurrection appearances of Jesus and his promise to be present always even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20) provide us with the Holy Spirit, who is the good faith down-payment (Ephesians 1:13-14) that God will one day bring us to see the kingdom of heaven as a reality here on earth. The Holy Spirit creates faith in us. That faith enables us to trust the promise of Jesus and wait for the new world God is creating in and through us.

Pastor Rike’s Sermon

Through the man, Christ Jesus, that future reign of God has already come to us.  He invites us to serve a better master than we have ever known before.  He promises a future beyond what we know now.  With the Word, in Holy Baptism, and through the Holy Communion we are called to trust that this invitation will finally deliver what it promises
