Baptism of Our Lord At-Home Service for Jan 10

This Sunday we celebrate the Baptism of Our Lord.  On that day in the Jordan River, John the Baptist saw what would remain hidden to everyone else until after Jesus died on the cross.

Pastor Rike’s Sermon

The meaning of Jesus was revealed to John and it can be summarized in three points: descending into sin, the Holy Spirit, and pleasing God.

[Descending into Sin]

When Jesus was baptized by John he descended into the depths of human sinfulness. Everyone else baptized by John came confessing sins. Jesus had no sin to confess, but, by being baptized, he committed himself to share with every other human by bearing the same burden. Sins, whether those we have committed individually or larger, systemic evils that plague us, always lead to death. For Jesus, going down into the water of the Jordan was a baptism into death! He did not deny or avoid the worldly consequence of sin. Instead, he faced it. He joined humanity in bearing those consequences. One of the things the Baptism of Jesus revealed was that he would die an unholy, sinful death that was not of his own making.
