Ash Wednesday, At-Home Service for February 17

Ash Wednesday falls on February 17 this year and with it, the season of Lent begins. Although historically Lent was a period of 40 days in which to prepare new Christians for baptism at Easter, most of us associate the season with penitence. We reflect on how we have sinned and where we have done wrong.

We repent of such things, telling God we are sorry for doing them. The Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday (Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21) even mentions three ways Christians have done this: prayer, fasting, almsgiving. I would add another: spending more time reading and reflecting upon Holy Scripture or the Bible.

I pray that all of us may observe a holy Lent this year, and I hope to be able to celebrate with you a very joyous Easter. particularly true now. The good news is that in an unpredictable world God never fails to provide. In fact, through Jesus, He has already given everything!

There will be a service of Holy Communion at 7 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. However, since we are avoiding skin-to-skin contact during the current pandemic, ashes will NOT be imposed as part of the service at church on February 17. Before that day every household in the congregation will receive a packet with prayers and a small amount of ashes you may impose on one another to observe the day.
