More About the 2019 World Day of Prayer

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Fox Chapel will host the annual ecumenical World Day of Prayer Service. This service brings together all of the local churches and helps us all to become more aware of global issues. Men, women, and children are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Originating more than a century ago, the World Day of Prayer began as a way to observe a common day of prayer among all faiths. Each year, a different country’s committee prepares the worship service. Churches of all denominations are invited to participate in the service and to take a turn as the host church.

This year World Day of Prayer gives us the opportunity to learn about the faraway, little known country of Slovenia, one of the smallest and newest countries in Europe. There is much to learn from the women who have written the 2019 service whose theme is based on Jesus’ parable of the Great Dinner (Luke 14: 15-24). The theme of, “Come–Everything is Ready” invites us to widen our circles and expand our communities. The worship service, written by the women of Slovenia, enables them to share stories of intergenerational wisdom, traditions and experiences of God’s profound love.

One phrase in the worship service especially captures the ideas that will be explored: “Welcoming God, in your love, you have prepared a table for all, and you inspire us to open our hearts and our homes to offer a place to the ones who are not yet at the table.” Who isn’t at your table yet? Who isn’t at your World Day of prayer Service — yet?” The women of Slovenia challenge us all to widen our circles, to expand our communities. This could not be more relevant for all of us in the light of recent tragedies in our local communities.

The Rev. Scott and Mrs.Lisa Boyd will be guest speakers. Rev. Boyd studied at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and is currently employed at Pittsburgh Region International Student Ministries (PRISM). Scott and Lisa spent almost 10 years serving as missionaries in Slovenia between 1992-2002. They have since returned several times and have kept close ties in Slovenia, planning to return again this coming Fall. They are both excited to share their experiences.
